Open Day

PAGE AWAITING RESTYLING – LOOKS VERY SIMILAR TO NEWS PAGE – GS

Content Navigation Menu

Due to the ongoing pandemic and the necessary social distancing measures we’ve put in place, we unfortunately cannot host prospective students and their parent/carers at our very popular Open Evenings this year.

As an alternative to this, we’ve created this page, along with posts on our Facebook page, to act as a virtual Open Day that will be live from Wednesday 2nd December. You’ll be able to meet some of our staff, learn more about what life is like at the UTC and even take a virtual tour of our school!

At 6.00pm on Wednesday 2nd December, our Principal, Cherry Tingle, will be hosting a live question and answer session on Zoom, which you can register for here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAsc-6vqjksG9MGEvPDSqrh9XQNViDfGC9a

This page will remain live, so please feel free to visit and take a look as many times as you like! We hope to run an in person Open Evening later in the school year, along with tours of the school during the school day.

We are a popular school, so to ensure your child has the best chance of securing a place for Year 10 and Year 12 entry for September 2021, please apply as soon as possible. You can submit your application by visiting this page and following the online instructions..

The school day – the UTC day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 4.00pm each day, except for Friday when school finishes at 1.15pm for all students. Students have a morning and afternoon break and a 30 minute lunch break. Students may stay in school until 5.15pm for supervised study.

Uniform – in previous years, all new Year 10 and 12 students have been provided with a full set of uniform free of charge, on behalf of one of our employer partners. The full set of uniform is made up of two polo shirts, a fleece, a lab coat, a pair of trousers and a pair of safety boots. The PE kit for Year 10 and any additional items can be purchased online from our uniform supplier, Liberty.

Transport – Local coach company, Hobans, operate the contract to provide student transport to and from the UTC. Hobans arrange the pick-up locations and payments directly with parents/carer. Routes are planned year by year, so pick-up locations can be changed every year according to need.

Learning Resource Centre (LRC) – the LRC is open to all students during break and lunch times with various clubs and activities including Film Club and homework support. We really hope the LRC will encourage students to develop a love of reading, not just for pleasure but so they can discover new things and ideas and develop their imagination – skills that any future engineer needs!

16-19 BursaryThe bursary offers financial support to help students remain in education; it offers households with an income of less than £30,000 financial support to ensure they are not at any disadvantage in their studies. The amount paid is dependent the household’s circumstance and full payment is made if the student meets attendance and behaviour targets and adheres to the terms of the UTC Sixth Form Home School Agreement.

iPads – from September 2020 learning and teaching at the UTC moved forward to a more technology based classroom, with the use of iPads in Year 10 lessons which will continue for the Year 10 cohort in September 2021. For either a one-off payment or a monthly payment over two years (payable by direct debit), students can purchase an iPad through school. A limited supply of school iPads are available for those who have not bought into the scheme

Catering – we operate a cashless catering system using students’ ID cards. Students can top up their catering account in two ways, either by using the top-up machine in school, or online via ParentPay. Our school meals are home cooked by the catering team using local produce – a typical weekly menu is below.
