Developing Future Engineering Talent Through Innovation
The Nuclear Solutions Group (NSG), part of Sellafield Ltd, has been working in partnership with Energy Coast UTC for the past two years, providing students with unique opportunities to gain hands-on experience in a real engineering environment.
As the development engine of Sellafield’s Asset Capability Team, NSG delivers rapid, practical innovation to solve operational challenges across the Sellafield site. Through its distinctive six-week Sprint Programmes, multidisciplinary teams design, build and test working prototypes to address real-world problems, often delivering measurable improvements in a matter of weeks rather than months.
Recognising the importance of creating meaningful workplace experiences for young people, NSG partnered with Energy Coast UTC after discussions around the challenges many organisations face in providing quality work experience opportunities. The Sprint Programme offered an ideal platform for students to gain valuable insight into engineering, project delivery and innovation in action.
Bringing Engineering to Life
Through the partnership, UTC students have taken part in a range of activities including work experience placements, workplace visits, mentoring, industry workshops and involvement in project lifecycle and engineering problem-solving activities.
To date, 11 students have participated in both the two-week Summer Sprint Programme and the six-week Sprint Programme. The experience immerses students in a professional working environment where they collaborate with engineers, tackle live challenges and develop practical solutions.
According to the NSG team, one of the most rewarding aspects of the partnership is witnessing the personal growth of the students throughout their placement.

They arrive quiet and a little apprehensive, but it is fantastic to watch each and every one of them grow and develop during their time here. By the end of the six weeks, they stand tall and confident when delivering their project presentations.”
